KEE Triton® UPGRADES EXISTING ACTIVATED SLUDGE TREATMENT PLANT AERATION SYSTEM

The wastewater treatment plant at the village of Keith in Aberdeenshire treats municipal wastewater from the village and effluent from a famous branded Whisky Distillery nearby.

The overall process on site includes inlet works with a grit chamber and screen for municipal wastewater. After this preliminary treatment, the municipal wastewater stream is mixed with the Distillery effluent and is processed through the first-stage high-rate biofilter tower. The effluent from the biofilter tower is then processed through radial flow-scraped primary settlement tanks and the settled effluent is discharged into a two-stage activated sludge basin consisting of two tanks of 7.92m x 7.92m x 4.65m deep (water depth 3.65m). The mixed liquor from the activated sludge plant is discharged through to three radial flow-scraped final settlement tanks and the settled effluent is discharged to a watercourse. The settled sludge is returned (RAS) to the activated sludge basin with excess sent to sludge storage.  Finally, supernatant from the sludge storage tank is returned to the feed for the high rate filter tower.

The aeration system for the activated sludge basin consists of two surface-mounted aerators driven by a 20kW common-geared motor through a propshaft delivering approximately 30kg/hour of dissolved oxygen.

triton-upgrade-001
EXISTING AERATION SYSTEM – ONLY ONE SURFACE AERATOR OPERATING

The total BOD load to the plant from municipal and industrial sources is 570 kg/day and approximately 285kg of this is reduced through the high rate biofilter and the remaining 285kg/day is required to be treated through the activated sludge plant. The aeration tank capacity is 230m3 each and is normally operated at MLSS concentration of approximately 2000mg/l. One of the surface aerators in the existing aeration system had failed and a temporary venturi aeration system was installed to assist in oxygen supply.

KEE were requested to visit the site, analyse the situation and evaluate the process requirements to make a proposal to upgrade the aeration system. The factors to be taken into account included the need to upgrade the aeration system whilst the plant continued to operate (without decommissioning the plant) and to ensure that the new aeration device produced less than 60dB noise. KEE evaluated the existing process parameters and concluded that the plant could be operated at a higher MLSS concentration of up to 4000 mg/l at a substrate loading rate of 0.15g BOD/g MLSS.  The estimated dissolved oxygen demand on this basis would be approximately 33kg/hour.

KEE proposed to install four 5.6kW dual mode Triton processors to provide complete mixing of both the aeration basins and to supply up to 40kg/hour of dissolved oxygen. The Triton dual mode processor is an efficient aeration device which provides total (horizontal and vertical) mixing of the whole basin. It can be mounted from a wall or a bridge or can be supported from floats. The Triton can mix up to a depth of 10m and therefore is also ideal for upgrading existing aeration systems for total replacement or supplemental aeration. The Triton uses a low-power regenerative blower for air supply and a direct-coupled electric motor to generate a plume of fine bubble aeration which is able to penetrate through to the bottom of the tank. This  air/water mixer provides a long retention period for air bubbles and the resulting high efficiency oxygen transfer into the mixed liquor. By EPA definition the Triton is a fine bubble aerator.

triton-upgrade-004
KEE TRITON® AERATION IN OPERATION

The four Tritons were mounted from the side walls of the existing tanks and, once all the installation work was completed over two days, the electrical cabling was finalised. The blowers supplying air into the Triton were controlled through D.O. probes located in the aeration basin. Once all the electro mechanical work was complete the Tritons were switched on and the old aeration system switched off. The plant aeration system upgrade was achieved in less than one week’s time on site and without any downtime on the existing treatment process. There was no need to hire temporary plants to relieve activated sludge plant. Apart from large savings in capital and operating costs, the biggest benefit was that all the logistics and space problems associated with installing a temporary plant were avoided. The noise emitted by the new aeration system is much lower than specified and definitely lower than the previous system. The process performance of the plant has improved and the plant is able to meet its specified process objectives and has continued to do so for over twelve months.

WASTEWATER TREATMENT IN IRELAND – EXPLAINING THE CHALLENGES

KEE Process has been working with private companies and public bodies in Ireland for over 40 years.

KEE Process is a major supplier of process engineered treatment systems to local councils and private companies in Northern and southern Ireland. KEE has supplied and installed plants at over 20 sites in Southern and Western Divisions of Water Services, Northern Ireland, for populations ranging from 100PE to 3000PE. The applications vary from simple municipal wastewater treatment plants providing basic treatment to supplying plants designed to produce high quality effluent with less than 3 mg/l of ammoniacal nitrogen and less than 5mg/l BOD and suspended solids.

KEE Process has worked with a number of Irish councils to upgrade treatment plants to allow the discharge of highly polluted industrial effluent into their systems. In many cases the requirements are stringent, requiring total nitrogen and phosphorus removal. KEE has a team of experienced process and project engineers capable of delivering solutions that combine simplicity of process design with low lifetime cost. Municipal wastewater treatment plants for small communities can be designed to accommodate and treat industrial discharges as long as these are taken into account at the design stage. However, sudden or intermittent discharge of industrial wastewater would shock load a small treatment plant and cause the municipal treatment plants to become overloaded and malfunction. KEE Process has provided solutions to overcome these problems. KEE has upgraded municipal facilities without upheaval and also overcome the problems by providing partial treatment of industrial discharges at source. This is particularly the case with municipal facilities which become oxygen limited in the activated sludge stage. One solution is to install a versatile dual mode TRITON® processor which provides mixing and/or introduces dissolved oxygen into the mixed liquor. A KEE DISPERSED AIR FLOATATION (DAF) MICROFLOAT® SYSTEM can be used to provide partial on-site treatment for industrial discharges, thereby reducing the load discharged into the sewer and the municipal treatment plant. KEE used its TRITON® Aerator to upgrade an overloaded municipal plant to accommodate loads generated from a distillery and are also in the process of upgrading a dairy plant using TRITON® to overcome oxygen deficiencies and to further introduce biological phosphorus removal in the plant. A KEE DAF system would be installed upstream of the biological process for fat removal.

KEE Group technologies include physio-chemical processes such as DAF, simple gravity solids and grease separators, biological processes such as anaerobic reactors (for high strength wastewater), fixed film Reactors (RBC & SAF) and suspended growth reactors (activated sludge processes – extended aeration, oxidation ditch, SBR, and extended aeration followed by Ultra Fine Filtration).

With the introduction of the European Water Framework Directive (WFD) and the need to treat pollution, it goes without saying that the polluter pays.  Consequently, industries which discharge large quantities of heavily polluted wastewater into the sewer will have to consider the options for on-site treatment to reduce their costs and the loads on the municipal treatment facilities. The treatment options which they should consider are physical, physical/chemical or biological treatment, or a combination of all or any of these. KEE Process have designed and supplied municipal wastewater treatment plants in Northern Ireland for sites at Kinallen, Fivemiletown, Bergah, Ballinamallard, Fintona, Lisbellaw, Caledon, Lislea and many othersIn Ireland many of KEE’s projects have been delivered through partnerships with John Molloy Engineering Ltd (JME), a firm of local M & E contractors who offer total supply and installation packages, with fully comprehensive after sales support.  Some of these projects include plants built at the following sites:

  1. Woodenbridge Hotel, Co. Wicklow.

The Woodenbridge hotel had a wastewater treatment plant that was failing to meet consent and was expensive to maintain and operate. When it decided to build a new 40-bedroom lodge on the Co. Wicklow site, the management decided to build a new plant to treat all the existing flows as well as the flows from the 40-bed expansion.  The onerous discharge requirements included reduction of total nitrogen and phosphorus and the plant had to produce final effluent to comply consistently with BOD < 20 mg/l, SS < 30 mg/l, COD < 80 mg/l, NH4-N < 20 mg/l, NO3-N (Nitrate Nitrogen) < 5 mg/l, Phosphate as PO4 < 12 mg/l, FOG (fat, oil and grease) < 20 mg/l and Detergent (MSAS) < 1 mg/l.

The plant also had to have low operational and maintenance costs. The supplier had to be able to provide a complete service including planned preventative and emergency maintenance, process and operation maintenance as well as effluent sampling. The proposal involved KEE and JME supplying, delivering, installing and commissioning a 60m3 primary settlement tank, a Module DC16 Rotating Biological Contactor and an ST6 hopper bottom GRP final settlement tank.  All this equipment was factory built and delivered to the hotel site ready for installation on concrete slabs.  The plant was installed and commissioned in 2003.  Since then it has operated extremely well mechanically and has delivered excellent process performance. The total electricity costs for the plant are less than EUR 1,000 per annum.

  1. Muskerry Golf Club.

This was a design and build turnkey contract for JME and KEE who were process partners in the project. The discharge license was direct to the watercourse and specified a BOD < 20 mg/l, SS < 30 mg/l, NH4-N < 20 mg/l and Phosphate as P < 2 mg/l. KEE supplied their compact single piece NuDisc® Model 1200 and JME laid the sewer, outfall and installed the treatment plant with a committee of engineers from the club supervising the entire contract.

  1. Portmarnock Golf Club.

Portmarnock Golf Club in North County Dublin is one of Ireland’s premier link courses. During the recent refurbishment of the clubhouse, new on-site sewage treatment plant and disposal systems were required. The discharge license specified a BOD < 20 mg/l, SS < 30 mg/l and NH4-N < 10 mg/l, NO3-N (Nitrate Nitrogen) < 15 mg/l, Phosphate as PO4 < 5 mg/l and FOG (fat, oil and grease) < 10 mg/l. KEE Process Ltd and JME designed the process and supplied and installed a single-piece compact packaged plant NuDisc® F13N with inbuilt de-nitrification and phosphate removal stages. The JME contract also included the design and installation of an inlet pumping station and a sub-surface percolation area.

  1. Kilbride Army Camp.

This was a plant for a military camp with variable flows and high fluctuations in the seasonal loads and an onerous discharge license with BOD < 10 mg/l, SS < 10 mg/l and Phosphate as P < 2 mg/l. KEE supplied its packaged compact single piece NuDisc® Model F13 and JME led the contract on installation and commissioning.

  1. Cork County Council, Killeagh.

This was an installation for a municipal treatment works for Cork County Council for 1000 PE.  The flow to the works are from combined drainage systems with a discharge license for BOD < 20 mg/l and SS < 30 mg/l.

KEE supplied their packaged modular treatment system and JME led the contract for installation and commissioning.

THE KEE GROUP – WHO AND WHAT ARE THEY?

ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES affect us all equally and most of us have a heightened awareness of the environmental impact on our planet. All of us need stable climate weather patterns, clean air and clean water for survival and we at KEE play our role in securing the cleanliness of our water sources.

KEE GROUP, comprising of KEE Process Limited and KEE Services Limited is a privately-owned British company which, for the past 60 years, has been at the forefront of providing affordable solutions for the treatment of wastewater and its discharge into a watercourse or the aquafer.

We all take for granted a clean water supply but the treated wastewater discharged into the environment, in almost all cases, does become a source for that clean water supply. Consequently over many  years, quality requirements for discharge of treated effluent to watercourses have gradually been tightened up and at present these quality requirements do not only relate to reduction of oxygen demand and suspended solids but also include nutrient removal such as total nitrogen and phosphorus. Behind the scenes at KEE, we have been busy making sure that we continue to rise to the challenge of the stringent requirements for discharge of treated effluent from Municipal and Industrial wastewater treatment systems.

To support this mission, KEE has patented and introduced a large range of technologies and hardware to provide systems for treating small and large flows. The small flows are treated using KEE NuDisc® single-piece packaged plants, which are designed and engineered to provide value for money and are configured to operate with minimum day-to-day intervention. In addition to these single piece KEE NuDisc® packaged plants, there is the modular system arrangement, based on various technologies such as RBC, SAF and Activated Sludge plants. These single piece and modular packaged plants are versatile in their application and are able to provide nutrient (total nitrogen and phosphorus) reduction in the packaged plant configuration.

KEE also provides and supplies solutions for larger flows, which may involve construction of a plant from modular components and hardware, or a totally on-site built system. KEE has all the technology options at its disposal and is therefore able to process-engineer the optimum solution for the application, taking into account the customer’s needs and the site requirements. To facilitate this, KEE provides the services of its Process Engineers to evaluate the site requirements and the treatment objectives. KEE wastewater treatment technologies include Submerged Aerated Filters (SAF), Rotating Biological Contactors (RBC), Extended Aeration Activated Sludge Treatment Plant, Sequencing Batch Reactor Activated Sludge Plants, Oxidation Ditch, Ultra-Fine Filtration Modules, Dispersed Air Flotation (DAF and Microfloat) and Anaerobic Reactor for treatment of high-strength industrial wastewaters. The suitability of any one, or a combination of these technologies and unit operations, will be assessed to arrive at the most optimised solutions.

KEE has introduced various features in the hardware offering the above technologies and these include:

  • Patented Managed Flow features in the system enabling hydraulic and organic attenuation of loads.
  • Removable fine bubble membrane diffusers in SAF Systems without the need to remove the media or empty the tank.
  • Highly efficient and cost effective dispersed air Microfloat® System for removal of fat, oil, grease, suspended solids, BOD and COD from industrial wastewater discharge.
Introduction of high-efficiency surface-mounted dual mode processor designed to provide efficient mixing and fine bubble aeration of deep basin activated sludge systems.

A good and well-executed engineered solution for treatment of wastewater is only part of the total ongoing requirement for our clients. To complete the package, KEE also offers its clients the basic service and maintenance of hardware and equipment, or can take over the total operation and maintenance of the plant on behalf of the client. The objective for KEE is to provide their customers with the lowest lifetime cost solution and KEE rises to the challenge by offering to operate the plant at a fixed price. This gives the client complete peace of mind. KEE also offers to operate and maintain plants supplied by other manufacturers after an initial survey and evaluation of the system already installed.

The Literature site  includes a complete set of KEE literature and Press information on all their technology and services offered, including KEE NuDisc®, KEE EnviroSAF, KEE Microfloat® Dispersed Air Flotation System and the Triton® Dual Mode Processor for aeration and mixing of activated sludge in conventional and extended aeration plants and oxidation ditches.

KEE EXPERIENCE IN IRELAND

KEE Wastewater Treatment and Disposal

KEE are a major supplier of process engineered treatment systems and have been heavily involved with Water Services and Local Councils in Ireland for supply and upgrade of wastewater treatment facilities.  The applications vary from simple Municipal wastewater treatment plants providing basic treatment to supplying plants which are designed to produce very high quality effluent with phosphorus and total nitrogen reduction.  In many cases the requirements are for less than 3 mg/l of ammoniacal nitrogen associated with less than 5mg/l BOD and Suspended Solids.

Having been involved with supplying many Municipal wastewater treatment plants in Northern Ireland for sites at Kinallen, Fivemiletown, Bergah, Ballinamallard, Fintona, Lisbellaw, Caledon, Lislea and many more, KEE are also working with Councils in Eire to upgrade treatment plants to facilitate discharge of highly polluted industrial effluent into their system.

Municipal wastewater treatment plants are able to accommodate and treat industrial discharges if these are taken into account at the design stage.  However, when the industrial discharge is intermittent and imposes sudden shock loads onto an otherwise overloaded Municipal facility, KEE have been able to offer solutions to overcome such  problems.  This includes upgrading the Municipal facility without much upheaval and also offering partial treatment of the industrial discharge at source to overcome the problems.  This is particularly the case with Municipal facilities which become oxygen limited in the activated sludge stage.  The solution is to install their versatile dual mode TRITON® processor which provides mixing and/or dissolved oxygen into the mixed liquor.  It is also possible to use the KEE DISPERSED AIR FLOATATION (DAF) MICROFLOAT® SYSTEM to provide partial on-site treatment to the industrial discharge to reduce the load discharged into the sewer.  KEE have used TRITON® Aerator to upgrade an overloaded Municipal plant in Scotland to accommodate loads generated from Distillery and are in the process of upgrading a Dairy Plant to upgrade the aeration system using TRITON® Aerator and to include biological phosphorus removal and reduce fat and grease by installing the KEE DAF system upstream of the biological process. “The polluter pays” and it therefore follows that those Industries which discharge large quantities of heavily polluted wastewaters into the sewer should consider the options of on-site treatment to reduce their costs and the loads on the Municipal treatment facilities.  The treatment options which should be considered are Physical, Physical/chemical or biological treatment or a combination of all or any of these.

KEE NuTech TERTIARY FILTERS

Biological Tertiary Filter Units for BOD, Suspended Solids, Ammoniacal and or Total Nitrogen reduction.

1.4 RENDER-modified

KEE have introduced a new range of tertiary filter units to their wastewater technology called KEE NuTech Tertiary Filters.

The new range of KEE NuTech Tertiary Filter units are a multistage biological – physical system and operates with minimal maintenance and does not require electrical power for its operation, except for specific circumstances. The tertiary filter polishes the final effluent from the final settlement stage of a treatment plant and the polished effluent can be discharged through a UV light disinfection system to make it suitable for irrigation use.

The media is contained in easy to handle bags and these bags are arranged to optimise the breakdown of the organic components of wastewater by alternating aerobic and anoxic stages.  The aerobic layers of media are aerated through natural ventilation using ventilation stacks and vent pipes or can be low pressure, low power, fan assisted through forced ventilation.

The bio-degradation capability of the tertiary filter eliminates the need to backwash the filter on a regular basis.  The tertiary filter media therefore provides the physical separation of the fine solids and the environment for the natural bio-degradation of these retained solids.

Tertiary Brochure (2nd Stage 1pp).indd

Tertiary Filter Options The KEE NuTech Tertiary filters are available as free standing units or as an integral part of a KEE Packaged Plant.

NuDisc Tertiary Filter system

KEE NuDisc® HR-R Packaged WwT Plant is a simple low energy, low maintenance system, offering the lowest lifetime cost compared to most similar packaged plants for high quality effluent in the market. The treated effluent can be recycled for irrigation, general outdoor washing, toilet flushing or similar non-potable use.

KEE EnviroSAF – FINE BUBBLE AERATION with easy access membrane diffusers, meaning no treatment down-time.

KEE offer another revolutionary fixed film technology using compressed air. Traditionally, SAF systems with structured media have been offered with fine bubble membrane diffusers, with the drawback that access to diffusers was difficult. Until now it has been necessary to remove media and empty the reactor tank of wastewater to access the fine bubble membrane diffusers.

KEE have patented new technology, making it possible to access the fine bubble membrane diffusers without the need of emptying the SAF tank, or removal of the media. Whilst one set of fine bubble membrane diffusers is being maintained the rest of the SAF plant can continue to function and treat the wastewater. This negates the need to empty or hire a temporary plant while maintenance is being carried out.

NuSAF-01

Cut-away view of the KEE EnviroSAF

KEE have installed 2500 PE SAF Systems in Scandinavia using this new EnviroSAF technology and also have built plants for UK Water plc..

The KEE EnviroSAF uses patented structured media which has a profile in its shape to induce velocity and pressure gradients in the air/water mixture flowing through the media. This concept enhances mixing and is responsible for keeping the biomass film on the media active and aerobic. KEE have offered SAF Systems for many years and have built100’s of containerised mobile plants for Work and Army Camps, where the systems were designed to be above ground as they needed to be mobile. Access to diffusers was therefore easy.

KEE have also installed SAF Systems in Northern Ireland where the final effluent quality achieved is extremely high, with BOD less than 4mg/litre, ammoniacal nitrogen less than 2mg/litre, phosphorus less than 4mg/litre and suspended solids less than 10mg/litre. The EnviroSAF technology offers all the process stability of fixed film reactors, but with the added advantage of using fine bubble diffused air, patented structured PVC media and the ease of access for maintenance of diffusers without the need to remove the media and emptying the EnviroSAF tank.

The KEE Group of Companies is committed to providing a customised approach to domestic, commercial and industrial wastewater treatment applications. With over 60 years’ experience in the development, design and manufacture of equipment, KEE has installed more than 350,000 solutions worldwide.

KEE MICROFLOAT DISPERSED AIR FLOTATION TECHNOLOGY REDUCES POLLUTION

KEE continually introduce improvements to effluent treatment technology in a bid to minimise environmental pollution from wastewater.

Many industrial processes, particularly food processing, drinks/brewery and dairy, generate a large volume of effluent that is discharged into the sewer. The raw wastewater has high biological oxygen demand (BOD), high chemical oxygen demand (COD) and Fat, Oil and Grease (FOG).  To reduce environmental pollution, companies often pre-treat the wastewater before the wastewater is discharged into the sewer.

KEE-microfloat-01

Cut-away view of the KEE Microfloat Dispersed Air Flotation Technology.

KEE-microfloat-02

Process diagram of the KEE Microfloat technology.

KEE-microfloat-03

This food processing plant reduced surcharges with the KEE Microfloat.

Until now, a system known as Dissolved Air Flotation (DAF) has been used to do this.  The conventional DAF system uses a high-pressure pump, venturi system and pressure vessel to dissolve air into the wastewater. The solution of air and water is stabilised in a pressure vessel under high pressure. A stream from the pressure vessel is discharged into a separating vessel where the air comes out of solution and is released as a fine bubble spray. These bubbles greatly reduce the pollutants by floating them to the surface where they are removed by equipment designed to remove the floating layer.

The KEE Microfloat system achieves the same result without the need to use a high-pressure pump and venturi. Instead, it incorporates a patented system from Aeration Industries that uses a low-power motor. A specially designed propeller disc on the aerator’s shaft produces extremely fine bubbles and transfers these 10-50μm air bubbles into the water through special ejectors.

The whole system is mounted in the circular flotation tank or could be mounted in a rectangular tank be retro-fitted into an existing DAF system.

Some major advantages of the KEE Microfloat system are that it:

  • Removes in excess of 90% of fats, oils and grease (FOG).
  • Substantially reduces the BOD and COD of the effluent.
  • Eliminates the need for fine screens either before or after fat traps.

The KEE Group of Companies is committed to providing a customised approach to domestic, commercial and industrial wastewater treatment applications. With over 60 years’ experience in the development, design and manufacture of equipment, KEE has installed more than 350,000 solutions worldwide.

NEW SERVICING REGULATIONS have been introduced for small sewage treatment plants and septic tanks.

KEE offer Maintenances Plans to that ensure that your sewage treatment plants and septic tanks are compliant.

The Environmental Agency in January 2015, introduced a new code of practice making you as a home or business owner fully responsible for the maintenance of your wastewater system. If you have a small sewage plant or a septic tank, by law you must ensure that your system is maintained properly and does not cause pollution.  It must comply with the ‘general binding rules’.  https://www.gov.uk/permits-you-need-for-septic-tanks.

Protect your local environment by following the rules.

Comply with the general binding rules, just follow our recommended steps below:

  • Get expert, specialist advice, call in a KEE Services engineer for an appraisal; your wastewater treatment systems should be serviced regularly and properly maintained. If it isn’t it can be a serious health hazard and pollute the local environment. Your sewage treatment system must be ‘fit-for-purpose’ and comply with industry standard EN 12566.
  • You are also at risk of prosecution if the regulations are not upheld.
  • You are limited to discharge a maximum of 2,000 litres of treated sewage per day into the ground or 5000 litres of treated sewage per day to flowing water.

If you discharge more you will need a permit.

Regularly maintaining your treatment system properly will help prevent pollution, avoid costly repair bills and minimise your energy consumption:

  • Get the sludge emptied regularly
    http://www.keeservices.com/kee-tankering.html.
  • Get it serviced using a KEE engineer and fix any problems immediately
    http://www.keeservices.com/planned-maintenance.html.
  • Regularly check your system for any signs of pollution such as sewage smells, pools of water, sludge, foam etc. If you notice any of these issues please contact KEE to arrange a service visit.  http://www.keeservices.com/book-a-service.html.
  • Don’t flush sanitary items, nappies, ‘flushable’ wipes or similar objects down the toilet as they can block the system.
  • Don’t push fats, oils or chemicals down the drain as they kill bacteria that break-down the waste. KEE offer a biological solution to solve this problem:
    http://www.keebioguard.com/index.html.
  • Use low or no phosphate detergents, which are kinder to the environment.
  • Keep maintenance records to know when to service and empty your system.

Call KEE today on 01296 634500 for advice on a maintenance plan that ensures your system is compliant or visit:  http://www.sewage-plant-maintenance.co.uk  and arrange a call-out.
